Inspirational Quotes by Anna Pavlova (Russian Ballerina)

Anna Pavlova (1881–1931,) fully Anna Pavlovna Pavlova, was a Russian ballerina celebrated for her solo dance The Dying Swan. During her time—perhaps even now—as the most celebrated dancer globally, she carried on long, globe-covering tours, creating new ballet audiences everywhere.

Born in St. Petersburg, Pavlova trained at the Imperial Ballet School and joined the Mariinsky Theatre Company in 1899. She quickly became famous, creating roles in work by choreographer Mikhail Fokin, particularly The Dying Swan (1907.) After traveling to Paris with ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1909, she began touring worldwide with her own company dancing reduced renditions of the classics.

Upon settling in Britain in 1912, Pavlova formed her own company and highlighted her outstanding performances in classical ballets such as Giselle. She choreographed over a dozen works, of which the best known are Snowflakes (1915) and Autumn Leaves (1919.) She did much to develop the stereotyped image of the ballerina, which persists today.

Pavlova’s biographies are Keith Money’s Anna Pavlova: Her Life and Art (1982,) Ellen Levine’s Anna Pavlova, Genius of the Dance (1995,) and Laurel Snyder and Julie Morstad’s Swan: The Life and Dance of Anna Pavlova (2015.) Victor E. Dandré (1870–1944,) a former Duma official who left Russia and became Pavlova’s husband, wrote a biography (1932.)

The Pavlova, a meringue-based dessert, is believed to have been created in her honor during a tour of New Zealand and Australia in the 1920s.
