Rory Sutherland (b.1965,) fully Roderick Henry Sutherland, is a British advertising executive, writer, and behavioral economics advocate, best known for his role as Vice Chairman of Ogilvy UK and for popularizing the application of psychology to marketing and business strategy. He has become a leading voice in demonstrating how human behavior, rather than rational models, drives consumer decisions.
Born in Usk, Monmouthshire, Wales, Sutherland studied Classics at Christ’s College-Cambridge, graduating with a degree in Latin and Greek. After university, he began his career in advertising, joining Ogilvy & Mather in 1989 as a trainee planner. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Creative Director and later Vice Chairman of Ogilvy UK, where he championed behavioral science as a tool for solving business problems. His early career was marked by innovative campaigns and a willingness to challenge conventional marketing wisdom.
Sutherland’s publications have brought his ideas to a global audience. His first major book, The Wiki Man (2011,) blends autobiography with insights into advertising and behavioral economics. He followed with Alchemy: The Dark Art and Curious Science of Creating Magic in Brands, Business, and Life (2019,) which argues that irrational solutions often outperform rational ones in marketing and problem-solving. His essays and columns in The Spectator, where he has written the “Wiki Man” column since 2008, further showcase his wit and intellectual curiosity.
