Mary Higgins Clark (1929–2020,) née Mary Theresa Eleanor Higgins, was an American mystery and suspense writer. This “Queen of Suspense” was a fixture on bestseller lists for more than four decades. Many of her novels and stories were adapted into films.
Born in New York City, Clark worked as a secretary, then as a flight attendant for Pan Am. She married as a young woman, had five children, and became widowed. To get by, Clark wrote radio scripts and then a début attempt, Aspire to the Heavens: A Biography of George Washington (1968) that sold poorly.
Clark’s first suspense story, Where Are the Children? (1975) was a bestseller. She followed it with five more, including A Stranger is Watching (1978,) The Cradle Will Fall (1980,) While My Pretty One Sleeps (1989,) We’ll Meet Again (1999,) Daddy’s Gone a Hunting (2013,,) and I’ve Got My Eyes on You (2018.)
Clark also co-wrote a series of Christmas mysteries with her daughter, Carol Higgins Clark, including Deck the Halls (2001) and The Christmas Thief (2008.) Her memoir is Kitchen Privileges (2001.)
