Inspirational Quotes by Abba Eban (Israeli Statesman)

Abba Eban (1915–2002,) fully Abba Solomon Eban, originally Aubrey Solomon, was an Israeli diplomat and politician who served as foreign minister of Israel 1966–74. He was also a scholar of the Arabic and Hebrew languages.

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Eban grew up in England. He was educated at Cambridge and taught oriental languages there before serving as a liaison officer at Allied HQ during World War II. By 1944, he was working in the Middle East Arab Centre in Jerusalem.

In 1948, Eban became the Israeli U.N. representative in New York. He was responsible for the 1949 address to the General Assembly, which resulted in Israel’s acceptance into the U.N. He became Israel’s permanent representative and served until 1959.

Eban concurrently served as ambassador to Washington 1950–59. Returning to Israel in 1959, he won a seat in the Knesset and joined David Ben-Gurion’s government as minister of education and culture. Between 1959 and 1974, he held several posts under various prime ministers, including foreign minister 1966–74. He remained a member of the Israel Labour Party in the Knesset until 1988.

Eban’s many publications include Voice of Israel (1957,) The Tide of Nationalism (1959,) My People (1969,) My Country (1972,) An Autobiography (1977,) The New Diplomacy (1983,) Israel Through My Eyes (1993,) Personal Witness (1992,) and Diplomacy for the Next Century (1998.)
