Friedrich Waismann (1896–1959) was an Austrian philosopher, mathematician, and physicist celebrated for his impact on logical positivism and linguistic philosophy.
Born in Vienna, Waismann initially studied mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna before shifting his focus to philosophy under Moritz Schlick, founder of the Vienna Circle. His extensive dialogues with Ludwig Wittgenstein further shaped his ideas, later published posthumously in Ludwig Wittgenstein and the Vienna Circle (1979.)
Following Austria’s annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938, Waismann emigrated to the United Kingdom, where he held academic posts at Cambridge and Oxford, lecturing on the philosophy of mathematics and science. In epistemology, he introduced the concept of “open texture,” contending that empirical concepts cannot anticipate every possible application and that empirical statements are never strictly verifiable. His approach merged rigor with inquiry, influencing both fields.
His major works include Introduction to Mathematical Thinking: Concepts (1936,) which examines the conventional nature of mathematical reasoning, and The Principles of Linguistic Philosophy (1965,) a posthumous publication reflecting his evolving ideas. His writings challenged conventional views by emphasizing the nuanced, dynamic nature of language. Other notable works include How I See Philosophy (1968,) Philosophical Papers (1976,) and Lectures on Philosophy of Mathematics (1982.)
