Inspirational Quotes by Daniel Barenboim (Israeli Pianist, Conductor)

Daniel Barenboim (b.1942) is an Israeli pianist, conductor, and activist. He is also celebrated for his musical talents—his bold efforts to promote peace through music in the Middle East.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Barenboim made his début there at the age of seven. His family moved to Israel in 1952. He studied with Igor Markevich (1912–83) and Nadia Boulanger and has performed regularly in Europe since 1954.

As a pianist, Barenboim was admired for his artistic interpretations of Mozart and Beethoven’s works. As a conductor, he was recognized primarily for his musical directorship of the Orchestre de Paris 1975–88 and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra 1991–2006. In 1967, Barenboim married the cellist Jacqueline du Pré; the onset of multiple sclerosis at the height of her career was devastating.

In the 1990s, Barenboim met Palestinian American political activist and literary scholar Edward Said, with whom Barenboim formed the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra (1999,) bringing together young Israeli, Arabic, and European musicians. In 2006, he became the principal guest conductor at La Scala, Milan.

Barenboim wrote several books, including the autobiography A Life in Music (1991) and the collection of essays Music Quickens Time (2008.)
