Richard Duane “Rick” Warren (b.1954) is an American Southern Baptist pastor. This organizer of Saddleback Church and the author of the best-selling The Purpose-Driven Life (2002) is the archetype of charismatic pastors who lead semi-independent megachurches and have invigorated post-1960s American Protestantism.

Born in San Jose, California, Warren is a fourth-generation Southern Baptist pastor. He earned a B.A. from California Baptist College, a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and a Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California.

Warren established his Saddleback Church in California and led its first public service on Easter Sunday, 1980. Within two decades, the church developed into a celebrated congregation of over 20,000 members who attended six Sunday services at ten locations on its 120-acre estate. Warren became one of the most influential Evangelical Christians in the United States. His ministry spawned 30 offspring churches and sent thousands of members on mission projects around the world.

Warren’s bestselling The Purpose-Driven Church (1997) focused on evangelism and fellowship. His subsequent Christian self-help guide, The Purpose-Driven Life (2002,) encouraged churchgoers to inquire, “What am I here for?” Warren’s books have sold 25 million copies and have been translated into more than 25 languages.
