Richard Pryor (1940–2005,) fully Richard Franklin Lennox Thomas Pryor Sr., was an American stand-up comedian and actor, celebrated for his keen observations and storytelling. He garnered numerous accolades, including a Primetime Emmy Award and five Grammy Awards. In 1998, he received the first Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
Born in Peoria, Illinois, Pryor endured a challenging early life, but found an outlet in performance, starting as a class clown and in community theater. His early stand-up career in 1960s New York clubs featured a more conventional style, gaining him television exposure. A pivotal moment in 1967, where he walked off stage in Las Vegas, marked his breakthrough. Beyond stand-up, Pryor co-wrote Blazing Saddles (1974) and starred in comedies, often alongside Gene Wilder, in films like Silver Streak (1976) and Stir Crazy (1980.) His autobiography, Pryor Convictions, was published in 1995.
