Donald Mcintosh “Don” Kendall (1921–2020) was an American businessperson. As CEO of Pepsi Cola and later PepsiCo 1971–86, he built PepsiCo into a soda and snack-food giant, and Pepsi emerged as a serious rival to Coca-Cola. Kendall remained on PepsiCo’s board until 1991.

Born in Sequim, Washington, Kendall milked Holstein cows twice a day at his family’s dairy farm when he was young. He secured a football scholarship to Western Kentucky State Teachers College in Bowling Green. World War II interrupted his education, and he joined the U.S. Navy and became a pilot. He was shot down near the Philippines and earned a Distinguished Flying Cross.

After returning home in 1947, Kendall joined Pepsi Cola Company rather than return to school. He operated as a Pepsi bottler, delivery driver and, fountain-syrup salesman. Then he rose through the sales ranks, becoming a marketing vice-president, and then leading Pepsi’s international operation. Becoming the CEO in 1963, he supervised the company’s merger with the snack giant Frito-Lay in 1965 and oversaw PepsiCo’s rapid growth through effective management and diversification.

Kendall also brought Pepsi to China and the Soviet Union, acquired fast-food chains such as Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and Kentucky Fried Chicken, and helped establish the modern diet soda with Diet Pepsi.
