John Alexander Robinson (1935–2024) was an American football coach celebrated for his two highly successful stints leading the USC Trojans and his accomplished tenure with the Los Angeles Rams. Over a career that bridged college and professional football, Robinson became one of the sport’s most respected figures, guiding USC to four Rose Bowl victories and a share of the 1978 national championship. His Rams teams reached two NFC Championship Games, and his achievements earned him induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Robinson attended the University of Oregon, where he played football before graduating. He launched his coaching career at Oregon as an assistant 1960–71, a period that shaped his strategic approach to offense, player development, and program building. As modern football analysis gained prominence, Robinson contributed to the conversation through works such as Coaching the Trojans (1978) and Winning the Right Way (1985,) which reflected his philosophy and leadership style.
His disciplined, player-focused approach made him a defining presence in West Coast football.
