Inspirational Quotes by Edward Teller (American Nuclear Physicist)

Edward Teller (1908–2003) was a Hungarian-born American nuclear physicist. This “the father of the hydrogen bomb” participated in producing the first atomic bomb (1945) and led the development of the world’s first thermonuclear weapon, the hydrogen bomb.

Born a family of prosperous Hungarian Jews in Budapest, Austria-Hungary, Teller graduated in chemical engineering at Karlsruhe, Germany, studied theoretical physics at Munich and Göttingen, and under Niels Bohr at Copenhagen. He left Germany in 1933, lectured in London and Washington, and contributed profoundly to the modern explanation of solar energy.

Teller worked on the Manhattan atomic bomb project (1941–46) and joined Robert Oppenheimer’s theoretical study group at Berkeley, California, where he was director of the new nuclear laboratories at Livermore (1950.) From 1963–66, he was chair of applied science at California University, then University Professor (1971–75.)

Teller was a passionate advocate for nuclear energy development, a robust nuclear arsenal, and a vigorous atomic testing program. After Russia’s first nuclear test (1949,) Teller was one of President Harry S Truman’s crash program architects to build and test (1952) the world’s first hydrogen bomb. A fierce opponent of communism and arms control, he supported President Ronald Reagan’s strategic defense initiative.

Teller was notorious throughout his life for his scientific ability, volatile personality, and difficult interpersonal relations. His publications include The Legacy of Hiroshima (1962) and his Memoirs (2001.)
