Inspirational Quotes by James Maitland Stewart (American Film Actor)

James Stewart (1908–97,) fully James Maitland Stewart, byname Jimmy Stewart, was a prominent American motion-picture star whose career spanned over 55 years and 80 films. Having first built a reputation as a genial everyman with stammering folksy charm, he was known for his portrayals of the humble but morally resolute all-American hero.

Born in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Stewart studied architecture at Princeton, before his work with a summer stock company prompted him to turn to act, first on Broadway and later in Hollywood (from 1935.) Tall, gangly, and with a distinctive drawl, he first played naive idealists with integrity in films such as You Can’t Take It With You (1938,) Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939,) and Destry Rides Again (1939.)

After distinguished service in World War II, Stewart returned as the quintessential small-town man in It’s a Wonderful Life (1946.) He starred in the title role of The Glenn Miller Story (1953) before developing a more mature image playing tough and resourceful heroes in westerns and thrillers such as Rear Window (1954,) The Man from Laramie (1955,) Vertigo (1958,) and Anatomy of a Murder (1959.)

Nominated five times for the Academy Award, he won a Best Actor award for The Philadelphia Story (1940) and received an honorary award in 1984. His later work included Fool’s Parade (1971) and Right of Way (television, 1983.)

Stewart published Jimmy Stewart and His Poems in 1989. In 1999, the American Film Institute (AFI) ranked him third on its list of the greatest American male actors.
