Inspirational Quotes by Henry C. Alexander (American Banker)

Henry Clay Alexander (1902–69) was an American banker and lawyer. He served as president, chairman, and CEO of J.P. Morgan & Co.

Born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Alexander graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1923 and Yale Law School in 1925. Working at a New York law firm, he served as counsel to J. P. Morgan Jr. and joined the House of Morgan in 1938.

Alexander combined the Morgan Bank with the securities firm Morgan, Stanley, and Co. to create the commercial bank and trust corporation J.P. Morgan & Co. in 1940. He became its president and CEO in 1950 and chairman of the board in 1955. In 1959, he led the merger of J.P. Morgan with Guaranty Bank, expanding his company’s capital funds from $89 million to $512 million.

Alexander also served on the board of directors of General Motors, the American Viscose Corporation, Standard Brands, Presbyterian Hospital, Vanderbilt University, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
