Inspirational Quotes by Carl von Clausewitz (Prussian General)

Carl von Clausewitz (1780–1831,) born Carl Philipp Gottlieb Clausewitz, was a Prussian general and military theorist whose work on warfare and strategy has shaped military thought and political science for centuries.

Born in Burg bei Magdeburg, Prussia, he joined the army at 12 and later attended the Institute for Young Officers in Berlin, studying under Gerhard von Scharnhorst. He fought in the Napoleonic Wars, including the battles of Jena-Auerstedt (1806) and Borodino (1812,) experiences that deeply influenced his military theories.

His most famous work, Vom Kriege (1832; On War,) was published posthumously by his wife, Marie von Brühl. It remains a foundational text in military strategy, introducing concepts like the “fog of war” and the idea that “war is the continuation of policy with other means.” His writings stress war’s unpredictability and the need for adaptability in planning.

Donald Stoker’s Clausewitz: His Life and Work (2014) provides a examination of Clausewitz’s military career and intellectual contributions.
