Carrie Frances Fisher (1956–2016) was an American actress and author. She was much-loved for her iconic role as the intergalactic rebel leader Princess Leia Organa in the space opera Star Wars and semi-autobiographical books like Postcards from the Edge (1987.)
Born in Burbank, California, Fisher was the daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher. Fisher grew up in Hollywood, making her acting début at age 15 alongside her mother in Irene’s Broadway musical.
Fisher was cast as Princess Leia in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977,) Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980,) Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983,) Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015,) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017; released posthumously.) On top, Fisher appeared in Shampoo (1975,) Hannah and Her Sisters (1986,) When Harry Met Sally (1989,) and Soapdish (1991.)
Fisher struggled with substance abuse and bipolar disorder throughout her adult life. Her After Postcards from the Edge was adapted (1990) for the big screen, starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine. Fisher also turned her autobiographical book Wishful Drinking (2008) into a one-woman play.
Fisher wrote two novels, Surrender the Pink (1990) and Delusions of Grandma (1994,) and a third memoir Shockaholic (2011.) The Princess Diarist (2016) selects her journal entries from filming the first Star Wars film.
