Inspirational Quotes by John Sutherland Bonnell (American Preacher)

The Reverend Dr. John Sutherland Bonnell (1893–1992) was a renowned Canadian-American preacher. A pioneer in pastoral counseling, he founded a clinic at his Manhattan church to provide a combination of psychological and spiritual guidance. He encouraged religious leaders to furnish themselves with modern psychological knowledge and skills.

Born in Dover, Prince Edward Island, Canada, Bonnell served in the Canadian army in World War I. After returning home due to injury, he received degrees from Dalhousie University and Pine Hill Divinity Hall in Nova Scotia. He was ordained in 1922 and served initially in New Brunswick and Manitoba.

For 26 years, from 1935–62, Bonnell served as a minister at New York’s Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, often called the “Cathedral of Presbyterianism.” Bonnell’s Sunday sermons were often published in New York’s newspapers.

Starting in 1943, Bonnell also reached millions of radio listeners with weekly conversations on the ABC Radio network. He was one of the first religious leaders to offer positive messages through a “dial-a-prayer” telephone line.
