Inspirational Quotes by Norman D. Vaughan (American Sportsman, Explorer)

Colonel Norman Dane Vaughan (1905–2005) was an American dogsled driver and Antarctic explorer. He participated in Admiral Richard E. Byrd’s first expedition to the South Pole.

Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Vaughan became fascinated by tales of early-century polar explorers. He dropped out of Harvard in 1928 when he heard that Admiral Richard E. Byrd was organizing an expedition to Antarctica. Admiral Byrd accepted him on the 1928–30 team, eventually naming a mountain on the continent in his honor.

Vaughan appeared in the documentary film With Byrd at the South Pole (1930.) He also ran dog teams in a professional capacity as part of a search and rescue unit in World War II, sporting events like the Olympics and the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. In 1994, at the age of 88, Vaughan participated in an expedition to climb the 10,302 ft (3,150 m) Mount Vaughan.
