Jacqueline Carey (b.1964) is an American author renowned for her work in the fantasy genre, recognized for rich world-building, intricate storytelling, and complex characters. She has gained acclaim for blending epic fantasy with elements of romance and political intrigue, crafting unique narratives that captivate readers worldwide. Born in Highland Park, Illinois, Carey grew up in an environment that nurtured her love for literature and storytelling. She pursued her passion for writing and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Michigan. Her early career included working as a waitress and a librarian, which allowed her the time and inspiration to write. Carey’s breakout work came with Kushiel’s Dart (2001,) the first novel in the Kushiel’s Legacy series. Set in a richly detailed world inspired by Renaissance Europe, the series follows the journey of Phèdre nó Delaunay, a courtesan-spy marked by a divine brand. This novel and its sequels were widely acclaimed for their daring mix of fantasy, adventure, and sensuality.
Beyond the Kushiel’s Legacy series, Carey has authored The Sundering duology, which includes The Sundering (2007) and Saints Astray (2010,) exploring themes of faith, destiny, and love. She has also written The Agent of Hel series and several standalone works, including Starless (2017.)
