Franco Harris (1950–2022) was an American football player widely celebrated as one of the greatest running backs in National Football League (NFL) history. He was a four-time Super Bowl winner with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of Super Bowl IX.
Born in Fort Dix, New Jersey, Harris attended Penn State University, where he became a star player for the Nittany Lions, helping the team win the 1970 Orange Bowl and earning MVP honors.
During his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers 1972–83, Harris achieved numerous accolades, including nine Pro Bowl selections and four Super Bowl championships. His most iconic moment came in the 1972 AFC Divisional Playoff Game, remembered as the “Immaculate Reception,” where he caught a deflected pass and scored a game-winning touchdown.
Harris finished his illustrious NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks in 1984. He retired as the NFL’s all-time leading rusher, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990.
