Inspirational Quotes by Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury (English Philosopher)

Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury (1671–1713,) was an English philosopher and writer whose work deeply influenced moral philosophy and aesthetics. His ideas embodied Enlightenment ideals, stressing reason, virtue, and the natural harmony between morality and human nature.

Born into an aristocratic London family, Shaftesbury was educated by John Locke, shaping his intellectual development. He attended Winchester College and served as Whig MP for Poole 1698–99. After inheriting his title in 1699, he was active in the House of Lords until poor health forced him to retire in 1702. Seeking better conditions, he spent his final years in Italy, dying in Naples.

His essays on philosophical and cultural issues were collected in Characteristicks of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times (1711.) A leading English deist, he argued—against orthodox Christianity and Thomas Hobbes—that humans possess a natural moral sense aligned with a cosmic order. In A Letter Concerning Enthusiasm (1708,) he critiqued religious fanaticism. In The Moralists, a Philosophical Rhapsody (1709,) he explored ethical ideas through literary dialogue. His work influenced thinkers such as Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Voltaire, Denis Diderot, and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing.
