William Franklin Leitch (b.1975) is an American sports journalist, author, and cultural commentator, known for founding and serving as the editor-in-chief of the popular sports blog “Deadspin.”
Born in Mattoon, Illinois, Leitch attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he edited the university’s paper, The Daily Illini. Over the years, he has contributed to various publications, covering topics ranging from politics to entertainment, and has appeared on television and radio programs as a sports pundit. Additionally, Leitch has held roles such as national correspondent for MLB.com, contributing editor at New York magazine, critic at Grierson & Leitch, and contributor to The New York Times, GQ, The Washington Post, and NBC News.
Leitch is the author of several books exploring sports and its cultural significance, including Life As a Loser (2003,) Catch (2005,) God Save the Fan (2008,) Are We Winning Golden Age of Baseball (2010,) and How Lucky You Can Be Don Meyer (2013.) Additionally, he has authored the novels How Lucky (2021) and The Time Has Come (2023.)
