Joseph Denis Murphy (1898–1981) was an Irish-born American author and New Thought minister known for his teachings on the subconscious mind. His work emphasized positive thinking, visualization, and spiritual self-improvement.
Born in Ballydehob, Ireland, Murphy was raised Catholic and initially pursued priesthood. He later moved to the United States, became a pharmacist in New York, and developed an interest in spirituality. Studying various religious traditions, including Hindu philosophy, he was eventually ordained in Religious Science and Divine Science.
As minister at the Los Angeles Divine Science Church, he built one of the largest New Thought congregations in the country. His teachings focused on applying spiritual principles to achieve success, health, and happiness.
Murphy’s writings blended psychology, spirituality, and metaphysics, making complex ideas accessible. His most famous book, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind (1963,) remains a widely read self-help classic. Other notable works include Your Infinite Power to Be Rich (1966,) The Cosmic Power Within You (1971,) and Think Yourself to Health, Wealth & Happiness (1979.)
