Inspirational Quotes by Nelson DeMille (American Author)

Nelson Richard DeMille (1943–2024) was an American novelist acclaimed for his action-adventure and suspense thrillers. Writing under his own name and pseudonyms including Jack Cannon, Kurt Ladner, Ellen Kay, and Brad Matthews, he became one of the most widely read authors of his generation. His works, often blending military themes, humor, and sharp dialogue, earned him consistent bestseller status.

Born in Jamaica, Queens, New York, DeMille attended Hofstra University before leaving in 1966 to join the U.S. Army. Serving as a First Lieutenant with the First Cavalry Division in Vietnam (1966–69,) he was decorated with the Bronze Star, Air Medal, and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. Returning to Hofstra, he completed his degree in Political Science and History (1970.) His early career included detective novels featuring NYPD characters, but his breakthrough came with By the Rivers of Babylon (1978,) which established him as a major voice in American thrillers.

DeMille’s career flourished with a string of bestsellers: Cathedral (1981,) Word of Honor (1985,) The Charm School (1988,) The Gold Coast (1990,) The General’s Daughter (1992)—later adapted into a film starring John Travolta—and Plum Island (1997,) which introduced his popular protagonist John Corey. Subsequent novels such as The Lion’s Game (2000,) Night Fall (2004,) Wild Fire (2006,) The Gate House (2008,) The Panther (2012,) Radiant Angel (2015,) and The Cuban Affair (2017) cemented his reputation. In collaboration with his son Alex DeMille, he co-authored The Deserter (2019,) Blood Lines (2023,) and The Tin Men (2025.)
