Inspirational Quotes by Tom Waits (American Musician)

Tom Waits (b.1949,) fully Thomas Alan Waits, is an American singer-songwriter, composer, and actor celebrated for his gravelly voice and eclectic musical style. His lyrics explore society’s underbelly, delivered in his signature raspy voice. Emerging from the 1970s folk scene, his music expanded in the 1980s to encompass rock, jazz, blues, opera, cabaret, funk, and experimental styles bordering industrial music.

Born in Pomona, California, Waits absorbed the beatnik literary ethos of the 1950s in his early music, becoming an unconventional chronicler of American urban life. He began performing in 1969, blending a variety of musical influences that achieved cohesion by the mid-1970s, exemplified by Heartattack and Vine (1980.) His subsequent album Swordfishtrombones (1983) marked a surreal shift, incorporating radical instrumentation and sound effects that define his later work.

Waits’s recordings became less frequent starting in the late 1980s, as he focused on film projects, both as a composer and an actor, with roles in The Cotton Club (1984) and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992.) The well-received comeback albums Mule Variations (1999) and Real Gone (2004) were interspersed with theatrical collaborations with Robert Wilson, producing music for Alice and Blood Money (both 2002.)

Waits’s books include Innocent When You Dream (2005) and Hard Ground (2011.)
