George Macaulay Trevelyan (1876–1962) was an English historian and academic, renowned for his engaging narrative style and contributions to Whig historiography.
Born in Welcombe, Warwickshire, Trevelyan attended Harrow and Trinity College-Cambridge. He later served as Regius Professor of History (1927–43) and Master of Trinity College (1940–51.) His writings reflected liberal ideals and a romanticized view of England’s history.
Trevelyan’s notable works include England in the Age of Wycliffe (1899,) which examines 14th-century social and religious upheavals, and British History in the Nineteenth Century (1922,) which analyzes political and social transformations. His History of England (1926) remains a key overview of the nation’s past, followed by English Social History (1944,) which focuses on societal changes.
He also wrote a trilogy on Giuseppe Garibaldi, published in 1907, 1909, and 1911, highlighting his admiration for the Italian patriot. An Autobiography and Other Essays (1949) offers reflections on his life and career.
