Inspirational Quotes by Kin Hubbard (American Humorist)

Kin Hubbard (1868–1930,) fully Frank McKinney Hubbard, was an American cartoonist, humorist, and journalist best known for creating the Abe Martin comic strip. His sharp wit and insightful observations captured rural American life. Will Rogers called him “America’s greatest humorist.”

Born in Bellefontaine, Ohio, Hubbard was the son of a newspaper editor, which shaped his early interest in writing and illustration. He left school before finishing seventh grade and worked various jobs before pursuing cartooning. In 1901, he joined The Indianapolis News, where he developed Abe Martin, a fictional character from Brown County, Indiana. Debuting in 1904, the cartoon became nationally syndicated by 1910, appearing in hundreds of newspapers.

Hubbard’s humor extended beyond cartoons—he also wrote essays and books. His first published work, Collection of Indiana Lawmakers and Lobbyists (1903,) preceded an annual series of Abe Martin books released between 1906 and 1930, compiling cartoons and reflections. Other notable works include Short Furrows (1912) and Book of Indiana (1929,) showcasing his satirical take on Midwestern life.
