Charles-Joseph, 7th Prince of Ligne (1735–1814) was a Belgian military officer, diplomat, and writer known for his Austrian army service and extensive literary works.

Born in Brussels, he was the son of Claude Lamoral, 6th Prince of Ligne. He distinguished himself in the Seven Years’ War (1756–63,) earning promotions for valor in battles such as Breslau, Leuthen, and Hochkirch. Later, as a trusted adviser to Emperor Joseph II, he undertook diplomatic missions to Catherine the Great in 1780 and 1786.

Ligne was a prolific writer, producing works on military strategy, literature, and personal reflections. His notable publications include Mélanges militaires, littéraires et sentimentaires (1795–1811,) a 34-volume essay collection, Fragments de l’histoire de ma vie (1927,) and Letters and Memoirs of the Prince de Ligne (translated by Leigh Ashton, 1927,) offering insights into European courts and intellectual circles.

After the Belgian rebellion of 1789, he lived in Vienna, continuing his literary and diplomatic work. His writings reflect experiences in war, politics, and aristocratic society, making him a key figure in 18th-century European history.
