Leroy Frank Van Dyke (b.1929) is an American country singer, songwriter, and auctioneer, known for his hit songs and lasting impact on country music. His career spans over six decades, making him one of the genre’s most enduring figures.
Born in Mora, Missouri, he studied agricultural journalism at the University of Missouri before serving in the U.S. Army Counter-Intelligence Corps in Korea. His breakthrough came with The Auctioneer (1956,) inspired by his cousin, a professional auctioneer. The song sold over 2.5 million copies, launching his career.
His biggest hit, Walk on By (1961,) topped the country charts for 19 weeks and was named Billboard‘s biggest country single of all time (1994.) Other notable songs include If a Woman Answers (Hang Up the Phone) (1962,) Black Cloud (1962,) and Big Man in a Big House (1962.) Van Dyke starred in What Am I Bid? (1967) and became a Grand Ole Opry member. He co-hosted Country Crossroads, the most widely syndicated country radio show.
