Bonnie Lynn Raitt (b.1949) is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist, celebrated for her contributions to blues, rock, and folk music. Known for her distinctive slide guitar playing and emotionally resonant vocals, she has earned multiple Grammy Awards.
Born in Burbank, California, Raitt was raised in a musical family; her father, John Raitt, was a Broadway singer. She studied social relations and African studies at Radcliffe College but pursued a music career driven by her passion for blues.
Raitt débuted with Bonnie Raitt (1971,) followed by Give It Up (1972) and Takin’ My Time (1973.) After years of moderate success, she gained mainstream recognition with Nick of Time (1989,) which won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Her subsequent albums, Luck of the Draw (1991) and Longing in Their Hearts (1994,) produced hit singles like “Something to Talk About” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”
Beyond music, Raitt advocates for environmental causes, human rights, and music education. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
