Nathan Paul Myhrvold (b.1959) is an American technologist, entrepreneur, and author, best known as Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer (1996–2000) and for his contributions to scientific research, invention, and modernist cuisine.
Born in Seattle, Washington, he studied mathematics, geophysics, and space physics at UCLA, earning B.S. and M.S. degrees. He pursued a PhD in theoretical and mathematical physics at Princeton University (1983,) conducting postdoctoral research under Stephen Hawking at the University of Cambridge.
Myhrvold co-founded Dynamical Systems Research, acquired by Microsoft in 1986, leading to his 13-year tenure, where he established Microsoft Research (1991.) After leaving, he co-founded Intellectual Ventures (2000,) focused on patent development and technology innovation.
His works include Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking (2011,) exploring food science; Modernist Cuisine at Home (2012,) simplifying advanced techniques; The Photography of Modernist Cuisine (2013,) showcasing culinary photography; and Modernist Bread (2017,) an in-depth study of bread-making.
