Inspirational Quotes by Marie Bashkirtseff (Russian Painter)

Marie Bashkirtseff (1858–84,) born Maria Konstantinovna Bashkirtseva, was a Russian-born artist, writer, and diarist, best known for her intimate journal, a significant literary and historical document. She was also a talented painter, exhibiting at the Paris Salon before her untimely death.

Born in Gavrontsy, Russian Empire (now Ukraine,) she traveled across Europe before settling in Paris. Initially aspiring to sing, she lost her voice due to tuberculosis and turned to painting and writing. She studied at the Académie Julian, one of the few institutions admitting female students.

Her most famous work, Journal de Marie Bashkirtseff (1887, Journal of Marie Bashkirtseff,) is a two-volume diary detailing her thoughts and artistic struggles. Other notable works include Letters of Marie Bashkirtseff (1891,) compiling her correspondence with literary figures, and Further Memoirs of Marie Bashkirtseff (1901,) expanding on her reflections.

Her realist paintings include The Meeting (1884,) portraying Parisian street children, and In the Studio (1881,) depicting female artists at work.
