Inspirational Quotes by Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey (American Journalist)

Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey (b.1938) is an American novelist, journalist, and playwright known for works featuring strong female protagonists, resilience, and self-sufficiency. She is best known for A Woman of Independent Means (1978,) later adapted into a stage play (1983) and television miniseries (1995.)

Born in Dallas, Texas, Hailey studied at the Sorbonne before earning a B.A. from Hollins College (now Hollins University) in 1960. She briefly worked in journalism and publishing before collaborating with her husband, playwright Oliver Hailey, on film and television projects, including serving as creative consultants for Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.

Her début novel, A Woman of Independent Means (1978,) inspired by her grandmother’s life, became a surprise bestseller. She later published Life Sentences (1982,) exploring family and identity; Joanna’s Husband and David’s Wife (1986,) which she adapted into a two-person play; and Home Free (1991,) a novel about self-discovery and independence.
