James Sheridan Knowles (1784–1862) was an Anglo-Irish dramatist and actor. He made lasting contributions to the Victorian theatre with his exploration of themes related to morality, justice, and human nature. He was a cousin of Richard Brinsley Sheridan.
Born in Cork, Ireland, Knowles initially embarked on a career as an actor but quickly gained recognition for his prowess in playwriting. At the age of fourteen, Knowles published the widely popular ballad The Welsh Harper, which led to his friendship with William Hazlitt. Through Hazlitt, he was introduced to Charles Lamb and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
Knowles’ magnum opus, the play Virginius (1820,) set in ancient Rome, narrates the poignant tale of a Roman soldier, Virginius, who sacrifices his daughter to protect her from the lascivious intentions of a corrupt judge. This tragic drama received widespread acclaim for its emotional depth and socially conscious themes. Additionally, Knowles authored several successful plays, including the tragedies William Tell (1825) and The Beggar of Bethnal Green (1834,) as well as the comedies The Hunchback (1832) and The Love-Chase (1837.)
Beyond his contributions to the stage, Knowles distinguished himself as a notable Shakespearean actor and a lecturer on dramatic literature. Later in life, he transitioned to become a Baptist minister, and his writings included The Rock of Rome; or, The Arch Heresy (1849) and The Gospel Attributed to Matthew in the Record of the Whole Original Apostlehood (1855.)
