Al Neuharth (1924–2013,) born Allen Harold Neuharth, was an American journalist, entrepreneur, and media executive best known for founding USA Today, one of the most widely read newspapers in the United States. His innovative journalism emphasized concise reporting, bold visuals, and accessibility, reshaping the industry. He also founded the Freedom Forum, a foundation dedicated to free speech and press rights.

Born in Eureka, South Dakota, Neuharth grew up in rural poverty and worked various jobs before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he studied journalism at the University of South Dakota. His early career included founding SoDak Sports, a statewide sports newspaper that ultimately failed but provided valuable business lessons. He later worked for the Miami Herald and Detroit Free Press, gaining newspaper management experience.

In 1963, Neuharth joined Gannett, expanding its holdings and launching Florida Today (1966,) a precursor to his national newspaper vision. In 1982, he founded USA Today, pioneering a modern, reader-friendly format that revolutionized print journalism.

Neuharth authored Confessions of an S.O.B. (1989,) a candid memoir about his career, and Free Spirit: How You Can Create the Future (1995,) reflecting his philosophy on leadership and innovation.
