Peter Charles Newman (1929–2023) was a Canadian journalist, editor, and author known for incisive reporting on Canadian politics and business. Over his long career, he interviewed every Canadian prime minister from Louis St. Laurent to Paul Martin, shaping public discourse with sharp analysis and insider perspectives.

Born in Vienna, Austria, he immigrated to Canada in 1940, fleeing Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. He studied at Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto before embarking on a journalism career spanning more than half a century. As editor-in-chief of the Toronto Star and Maclean’s, he transformed the latter into a dynamic newsweekly.

His literary works include The Canadian Establishment series (1975, 1981, 1998,) offering an in-depth look at Canada’s business elite, and Company of Adventurers (1985,) a history of the Hudson’s Bay Company. His autobiography, Here Be Dragons: Telling Tales of People, Passion and Power (2004,) won the Drainie-Taylor Biography Prize.
