Inspirational Quotes by Jacob K. Javits (American Lawyer, Politician)

Jacob Koppel Javits (1904–86) was an American lawyer and politician known for his progressive stance within the Republican Party. He served as a Representative (1947–54) and Senator (1957–81) from New York and was Attorney General of New York (1955–57.)

Born in New York City to Jewish immigrant parents, Javits grew up in a Lower East Side tenement. He attended Columbia University and earned a law degree from New York University School of Law (1926.) During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army’s Chemical Warfare Service.

Javits advocated civil rights, labor unions, and social welfare programs, often clashing with his party’s conservatives. He helped draft the War Powers Resolution (1973,) limiting presidential authority in military engagements.

His publications include Discrimination U.S.A. (1960,) Order of Battle: A Republican’s Call to Reason (1964,) Who Makes War: The President versus Congress (1973,) and Javits: The Autobiography of a Public Man (1981,) co-authored with Rafael Steinberg.
