Eliezer Shlomo Yudkowsky (b.1979) is an American artificial intelligence researcher, writer, and AI safety advocate. He is best known for his work on friendly AI, ensuring advanced systems align with human values. His contributions to rationality and decision theory have influenced discussions on AI alignment and existential risk.

Largely self-taught, Yudkowsky never attended formal higher education. In 2000, he co-founded the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI,) a nonprofit focused on AI safety. His research highlights risks of uncontrolled AI development, stressing careful design and ethical considerations. His ideas appear in AI safety literature, including Nick Bostrom’s Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies (2014.)
