Irving Kupcinet (1912–2003) was an American newspaper columnist, television talk-show host, and radio personality based in Chicago. Known as “Kup,” he built deep connections in entertainment and politics, earning recognition for his engaging style.

Born in North Lawndale, Chicago, he initially pursued football, playing as a Philadelphia Eagles quarterback (1935.) A shoulder injury ended his sports career, leading him to journalism. He began writing for the Chicago Daily Times (1935,) where his “People” section evolved into Kup’s Column (1943.) After the Chicago Sun and Chicago Daily Times merged (1948,) his column gained international syndication.

Kupcinet pioneered the talk-show format when he transitioned to television (1952.) His show, At Random (1959–86,) aired across 70+ stations. In 1957, he briefly co-hosted The Tonight Show before Jack Paar took over. His broadcasting work earned 15 Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award.

Beyond journalism, he appeared in Anatomy of a Murder (1959) and Advise and Consent (1962.) He also provided Chicago Bears radio commentary (1953–77,) showcasing his versatility across media.
