Valerie Wilson Wesley (b.1947) is an American author known for her contributions to mystery fiction and children’s literature.
Born in East Orange, New Jersey, Wesley graduated from Howard University and earned master’s degrees from the Bank Street College of Education and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.
Wesley gained acclaim for her Tamara Hayle mystery series, starting with When Death Comes Stealing (1994,) featuring a bold and resourceful African American female detective navigating complex cases in Newark, New Jersey. The series, spanning several novels including Devil’s Gonna Get Him (1996) and Dying in the Dark (1998,) earned Wesley recognition for its rich character development and insightful exploration of social issues within the genre.
Apart from her mystery novels, Wesley has written for young adults, with titles such as Ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do (2002,) addressing contemporary themes relevant to teenage readers. Her writings, both fiction and non-fiction, have also appeared in numerous publications, including Essence, Family Circle, TV Guide, Ms., The New York Times, and the Swiss weekly magazine Die Weltwoche.
