William Ford Gibson (b.1948) is an American-Canadian writer of science fiction who was the leader of the genre’s cyberpunk movement. Gibson’s work often explores the intersection of technology and society, delving into themes of identity and reality.

Born in Conway, South Carolina, he dropped out of high school in 1967 and traveled to Canada, eventually settling there and earning a B.A. (1977) from the University of British Columbia.

Gibson’s groundbreaking novel, Neuromancer (1984,) revolutionized science fiction by introducing concepts such as cyberspace and artificial intelligence, shaping the genre’s future and earning him the Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick awards. He continued to develop his unique vision in works like Count Zero (1986) and Mona Lisa Overdrive (1988,) which collectively form the Sprawl Trilogy.

In the 1990s, Gibson transitioned to writing contemporary fiction with novels such as Virtual Light (1993) and Idoru (1996,) further examining the implications of technology on modern life. His later works, including Pattern Recognition (2003) and Zero History (2010,) reflect a keen insight into globalization and media.

The Peripheral (2014) explores the potential for communication with future societies through computer technology, while its prequel/sequel, Agency, was released in 2020. In addition, Gibson published a collection of nonfiction titled Distrust That Particular Flavor in 2012.
