William Edward McLaren (1831–1905) was an American Episcopal bishop, known for his tenure as Bishop of Chicago (1875–1905) and his contributions to theological scholarship and church leadership. His work shaped Episcopal education and religious discourse in the late 19th century.

Born in Geneva, New York, he studied at Western University of Pennsylvania and Jefferson College, earning a B.A. (1851) and M.A. (1854.) Initially ordained as a Presbyterian minister (1860,) he later converted to Episcopalianism, becoming a deacon and priest (1872.) Elected Bishop of Illinois (1875,) he later became Bishop of Chicago (1877.) He founded Western Theological Seminary in Chicago (1885,) which merged with Seabury Divinity School (1933) to form Seabury-Western Theological Seminary.

McLaren authored several theological works, including The Practice of the Interior Life (1897,) Earnest Contention for the Faith (1890,) The Holy Priest (1899,) and Lenten Soliloquies for Private and Public Use (1904,) focusing on spiritual discipline, faith, and religious leadership.
