Inspirational Quotes by William Croswell Doane (American Bishop)

William Croswell Doane (1832–1913) was an American Episcopal bishop, poet, and hymn writer whose contributions to religious music and church leadership left a lasting impact on Christian worship.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he was the son of a prominent Episcopal clergyman. After graduating from Harvard University in 1852, he studied theology at the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge. Ordained as a deacon in 1855 and later as a priest, he served in various parishes, earning recognition for his eloquence and musical talent.

Doane’s religious devotion and literary skill led him to hymn writing, most notably Eternal Father, Strong to Save (1860.) This hymn became widely cherished, particularly among naval and military communities, and has been sung at sea services and memorials for decades.

In addition to his musical legacy, Doane was a respected church leader, serving as Bishop of Albany, New York, from 1869 until his death in 1913. His tenure was marked by efforts to expand the church’s reach and strengthen unity among congregations, solidifying his influence on Episcopal traditions.
