Inspirational Quotes by Wilfred Grenfell (Canadian Humanitarian)

Sir Wilfred Thomason Grenfell (1865–1940,) a medical missionary, physician, and social reformer, is best remembered for his profound medical and humanitarian contributions in Newfoundland and Labrador. His life’s work was dedicated to delivering healthcare and social services to remote communities.

Born in Parkgate, England, Grenfell’s journey began while he was a medical student at London University in 1887. Influenced by the sermons of American evangelist Dwight L. Moody, he joined the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen that same year. Over the next five years, Grenfell served as a surgeon on the inaugural hospital ship dispatched to the North Sea fisheries. In 1892, he initiated missionary service for the fishermen of Labrador.

Grenfell not only founded the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen but also established the Grenfell Mission in Newfoundland and Labrador in 1899. Inspired by his experiences, he aimed to improve the living and working conditions of fishermen. His efforts encompassed the creation of hospitals, orphanages, and co-operative stores to support local communities. To reach isolated regions, Grenfell utilized innovative methods, including hospital ships and dog sleds, ensuring that medical services extended to even the most remote areas.

Among his published works, Vikings of To-Day (1895) provided an account of his experiences with deep-sea fishermen, while Labrador: The Country and the People (1909) documented his keen observations of life in Labrador.

As one looks back through the ages, all the great men are men of faith: the Newtons, Faradays, Darwins, Marconis, men with faith which they confirmed by experiment.
