Inspirational Quotes by Warren G. Harding (American Politician, Publisher)

Warren Gamaliel Harding (1865–1923) was the 29th president of the United States 1921–23. A Republican, he was popular during his presidency, but posthumously, scandals such as the Teapot Dome affair and an extramarital relationship with Nan Britton damaged his legacy.

Born in Blooming Grove, Ohio, Harding grew up in a modest family. He attended Ohio Central College, graduating in 1882, and began a career in journalism, eventually purchasing and revitalizing the Marion Star newspaper. His success in media set the stage for his political career.

Harding entered politics as a Republican, serving in the Ohio State Senate 1899–1903 and as Lieutenant Governor of Ohio 1904–06. After a brief return to private life, he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1914. His charisma and strong speaking skills earned him national recognition.

In the 1920 presidential election, Harding campaigned on a platform of “return to normalcy,” promising stability after World War I. He won by a record margin and pursued pro-business policies, reduced government spending, and enacted the Emergency Quota Act of 1921 to limit immigration.

Our Common Country (1923) compiles his speeches and writings, showcasing his political vision.

I like people in the cities, in the States and in the Nation to ask themselves now and then: What can I do for my city? not How much can I get out of my city? I like people to speak now and then in the same devotion to State and Nation, because, after all, my countrymen, whenever a man contributes to the betterment of his community, whenever he contributes to the enlarged influence of his State, whenever he contributes to the greater glory of the Republic and makes it a better place in which to live and in which to invite men to participate and aspire, he contributes to himself as he contributes to the welfare of his fellow men.
