Born in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, Gilbey hailed from a modest background. His journey to success commenced when he joined the family grocery business at a young age, showcasing a natural entrepreneurial spirit.
In 1857, Walter, along with his brothers, founded W. Gilbey & Co., which would eventually evolve into one of the largest and most prosperous wine and spirits merchants in the United Kingdom. Gilbey played a pivotal role in democratizing the retail sale of wine and spirits, bringing quality products within reach of a broader audience. His innovative marketing strategies, featuring branded products and advertising, firmly established the Gilbey name as synonymous with trust and quality.
Beyond business acumen, Gilbey was deeply committed to social causes, engaging actively in philanthropy, particularly in the realms of education, healthcare, and various charities. Renowned as a breeder of shire horses, he made significant contributions to the improvement of English horse breeds, excluding racehorses. His extensive writings on the subject include The Great Horse, or The War Horse: from the time of the Roman Invasion till its development into the Shire Horse (1899) and the encyclopedia Animal Painters of England (1900.)
