Violeta Barrios de Chamorro (1929–2025) is a Nicaraguan politician, journalist, and publisher, best known as Nicaragua’s first female president (1990–97.) Her leadership transitioned the country from Sandinista rule to democracy, emphasizing peace, economic reform, and reconciliation.

Born in Rivas, Nicaragua, she was educated in the U.S. before returning home. She married Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal, editor of La Prensa, a newspaper critical of the Somoza dictatorship. After his assassination (1978,) she took over La Prensa, making it a symbol of resistance against authoritarian rule.

Initially supporting the Sandinista revolution, she later distanced herself from its Marxist policies. In 1990, she ran as the National Opposition Union (UNO) candidate, leading a 14-party coalition to a landslide victory over Daniel Ortega. Her presidency prioritized privatization, economic stabilization, and reducing military influence.
