Vicki Goldberg (1936–2025,) born Victoria Hesse Liebson, was an American photography critic, historian, and author known for her analyses of photography’s societal impact. Her writings explored photography’s cultural, historical, and artistic significance, making her a leading voice in the field.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she earned a master’s in art history from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts. She wrote extensively on photography’s evolution, its role in shaping perception, and its intersection with history and politics. Goldberg contributed to The New York Times, Vanity Fair, and American Photographer and lectured internationally. She received the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award (1997.)
Her works include Photography in Print: Writings from 1816 to the Present (1981,) an anthology of photography-related essays; Margaret Bourke-White: A Biography (1986,) examining the pioneering photojournalist; and The Power of Photography: How Photographs Changed Our Lives (1991,) exploring photography’s influence on culture and memory. Other books include Light Matters (2005,) a collection of essays, and The White House: The President’s Home in Photographs and History (2011,) documenting the White House’s history through images.
