Trạn Đức Lương (1937–2025) was a Vietnamese politician, best known as Vietnam’s sixth president (1997–2006.) His tenure focused on economic development, diplomacy, and national security.
Born in Quảng Ngãi Province, Vietnam, he studied geology at Hanoi University of Mining and Geology. He joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1959, working in geological research and resource management before entering politics.
In 1987, Lương became Deputy Prime Minister, overseeing scientific and technological progress. By 1996, he was elected to the Politburo, and in 1997, he succeeded Lê Đức Anh as president. His administration prioritized economic modernization, foreign investment, and Vietnam’s global integration. He was re-elected in 2002 but resigned in 2006, paving the way for Nguyễn Minh Triết.
