Tom Flores (b.1937,) fully Thomas Raymond Flores, is an American former football player, coach, and executive, best known for his contributions to the Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks. He was the first Mexican-American starting quarterback in professional football and later became a Super Bowl-winning head coach.
Born in Sanger, California, he played quarterback at Fresno City College before transferring to the University of the Pacific, graduating in 1958. He joined the Oakland Raiders in 1960 as the team’s first quarterback. He later played for the Buffalo Bills (1967–69) and Kansas City Chiefs (1969,) winning Super Bowl IV with the Chiefs.
After retiring, Flores transitioned to coaching, serving as a Raiders assistant (1972–78) before becoming head coach (1979–87.) He led the Raiders to two Super Bowl victories (XV and XVIII,) becoming the first minority head coach to win a Super Bowl. He later coached the Seattle Seahawks (1992–94.) His book, Fire in the Iceman: Autobiography of Tom Flores (1992,) details his life, career, and experiences in professional football.
