Tom Bodett (b.1955,) fully Thomas Edward Bodett, is an American author, voice actor, and radio personality, best known for his association with Motel 6 and his folksy storytelling style.

Born in Champaign, Illinois, he grew up in Sturgis, Michigan, before relocating to Alaska in 1976. Initially a carpenter, he later found success in writing and radio. His career took off as a commentator on NPR’s All Things Considered (1984,) and he gained widespread recognition as the voice behind Motel 6’s tagline, “We’ll leave the light on for you.”

His literary works focus on humor and small-town life. As Far As You Can Go Without A Passport (1985) offers a witty reflection on Alaska, while Small Comforts (1987) collects humorous essays. The End of the Road (1989) fictionalizes life in an Alaskan town, and The Big Garage on Clear Shot (1990) blends storytelling with personal observations. Last Decent Parking Place in North America (1991) continues his musings, while Williwaw! (1999) is a young adult novel set in Alaska.
